Waterbury, CT - Mr. Thomas W. "Whitey" Unwin, age 77, of Pearl Lake Rd Waterbury passed from this life on Friday evening, April 18, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Antoinette 'Toni" (Pennoni) Unwin.
Mr. Unwin was born September 15, 1930 in Waterbury CT, the son of the late Thomas and Nora (Fitzgerald) Unwin. He was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Grammar School and Sacred Heart High School. He was a veteran of the US Navy having proudly served his country through the Korean Conflict on the USS Cobbler a submarine and the USS Rich , a Navy Destroyer. Mr. Unwin was a toolmaker/machinst by trade and served his apprenticeship at Scovill Mfg. and worked at New Departure a Division of General Motors, retiring after 25 years of service. He was an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Monsignor Slocum Division in Waterbury, a member of the VFW Post 201 in Waterbury and a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church in Waterbury where he was very active in many activities and also served as an usher. Whitey was an avid golfer, a devoted Boston Red Sox and Nascar fan. He was widely known and appreciated for his great sense of humor and quick wit but most of all he was treasured by his family as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother.
Besides his loving wife of 55 years, Mr. Unwin is survived by two sons, Steven and his companion, Kathy Mattei, Thomas and his companion, Diane Becker of Waterbury, two daughters Noreen Hart and her husband Richard, of Southington and Mary Clarke and her husband David of Waterbury. He also leaves 6 grandchildren, Lorraine Greene, Olivia, Dylan and Ross Hart and Christian and Samuel Clarke. Mr. Unwin leaves a brother, Richard of Southbury and three sister, Katherine Maratto of Maine, Ellen Celentano of Schenectady NY and Mary Unwin of Waterbury as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mr. Unwin will be held on Monday, April 21, 2008 at 8:45 AM from Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home, 1581 East Main St, Waterbury, CT to St. Francis Xavier Church, 605 Baldwin St. Waterbury for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am. Burial will follow in Old St. Joseph's Cemetery, Waterbury. Family and Friends may visit the funeral home on Sunday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM
