WATERBURY - Mr. Thomas B. Unwin, age 65, of Waterbury, passed from this life on Thursday morning, June 24, 2021 surrounded by the love and comfort of his family at the home of his brother, Steven after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Tommy was born September 24, 1955 in Waterbury CT, the son of Antoinette 'Toni" (Pennoni) Unwin and the late Thomas W. Unwin. He was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Grammar School and Crosby High School. He had been employed as a machine tool operator for Thyssen Krupp Copper and Brass in Wallingford CT. He was an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Monsignor Slocum Division in Waterbury, a former member of the Washington Hill Athletic Club as well as a former Eagles Club member and a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church in Waterbury. He had many good times with friends and family at Howards Cafe on South Main Street, Waterbury. Tommy was a lover of music, particularly Nirvana and Guns & Roses, a Harley Davidson enthusiast and a dedicated NASCAR fan. He was a collector of die-cast cars and Dale Earnhardt memorabilia. He was widely known and appreciated for his great sense of humor, quick wit, but most of all he was treasured by his family as a devoted son, brother, father, grandfather and friend. Tom would frequently be found with his lifelong friends at "The Garage" working on motorcycles, watching Dale Earnhardt racing or having a BBQ and drinks. Tom treasured the memories of his many trips to Ireland with his father and good times and laughs with family and friends.
Besides his loving mother, Tom is survived by his daughter, Rainie Marie Greene and grandson, Chase Greene, his brother, Steven and his companion, Kathy Mattei, two sisters; Noreen Hart and her husband Richard, of Plantsville and Mary Clarke and her husband, David of Waterbury. He also leaves his nieces and nephews, Olivia, Ross, Dylan Hart and Christian and Samuel Clarke.
Tom's family would like to thank and acknowledge all the doctors, nurses and staff at the Smilow Cancer Center, the Harold Leever Cancer Center and to VITAS for the special treatment, care and dignity provided to Tom and his family during his illness.
Funeral Services for Mr. Unwin will be held on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church, 625 Baldwin St. Waterbury at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow in Old St Joseph's Cemetery. Friends and relatives may visit with the Unwin Family on Tuesday morning from 9:00 to 10:30 A.M. at Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Services 1987 East Main St. Waterbury. Until the greater Waterbury area reaches a 70% threshold of vaccinated population, those visiting the funeral home are requested to remain masked while inside or attending services.
