AT THE CASEY-O'DONNELL FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, WATERBURY CT Mrs. Vera ( Boucher) Samela, wife for more than 57 years of the late Daniel Samela and daughter of the late William and Evelyn (Moore) Boucher, died Friday, October 31, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury after several lengthy struggles with heart and lung disease.
Vera, born in Waterbury on September 19, 1921, was a beautiful, determined, witty and straightforward woman who considered her wonderful expanding family to be her life's greatest accomplishment. Mother and "Nonnie" to her seven children, 18 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter, she would often declare "they have only a few troops but I have an army" and "I never won an important prize or special medal, but my prize possession is my children and their families".
Vera loved to spend time with her family and enjoyed writing throughout her life. She possessed the talent of beautiful penmanship and the distinct ability to express herself very simply in conversation and very eloquently in a note or a card. "Am I right", she would often say when declaring her point, and she never missed sending family and friends special notes of comfort at just the right time or writing personalized well wishes for birthdays and anniversaries. Vera was a parishioner of SS Peter & Paul Church in Waterbury and she retired at age 62 after working for many years at Mattatuck Manufacturing in Waterbury.
Vera leaves her beloved children and compassioned caretakers during her difficult struggles with illness; Marguerite Dwyer and her husband Robert of Wallingford, Dianne Massucci and her husband Francis of Southington, Nicholas Samela and his wife Mary Beth of South Carolina, Daniel ("Chucky") W. Samela and his wife Shirley of Waterbury, Andrea Young and her husband James of Waterbury, Carl Samela and his wife Maggie of Oakville and Veronica Kircheimer and her husband Jay of Florida. She also leaves a sister, Louise Ricard of Cheshire and many loving and caring friends. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.
Vera's children and family are grateful for the warm and compassionate care of her longtime doctor, Dr. Jega as well as Nurse Cheryl Weber and everyone at the Cheshire VNA and Waterbury Extended Care.
