Decorated Seaman of World War II
OAKVILLE- Mr. Walter Valunas of Oakville, CT, 96, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at home. He was the husband of Constance (Morris) Valunas of 68 years.
Walter was born on May 5, 1924 in the Brooklyn section of Waterbury to the late Peter and Cecila (Zailskas) Valunas. Walter was a great athlete. He was lettered in three sports at Leavenworth High School and was eventually recruited by the New York Knicks but was drafted into the Navy during WWII and the Korean War. After returning home a hero, he worked as an auto mechanic, which was a profession he stayed in for 40 years. Walter met the love of his life, Constance and their love developed quickly and they married on December 22, 1951. One of Walter's greatest joys in life was being a father to his 3 sons who loving referred to him as "Pop". Not only was Walter a great athlete, he was a diehard NY Yankee fan. Walter had a love for the sweeter things in life. He loved travelling and the Brooklyn Bakery. He had a warmth that was contagious that would always put a smile on anyone's face. His loss will be felt by all those who were blessed to know and love him.
Left to remember, cherish and honor Walter's memory and legacy is his son, Thomas Valunas and his wife, Linda of Oakville, his beloved 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews who adored him. He was predeceased by his 2 sons, Walter Jr., and Robert and his sister, Ann Marks; and his brother, Joseph Valunas.
Due to the current governmental restrictions concerning COVID 19, funeral services for Mr. Valunas will be limited to his immediate family and held at the convenience of his family. Full military honors will be accorded this decorated Seaman. Please keep Walter and his family in your prayers during these challenging times.
