William J. Doomey

October 13, 1920 — February 19, 2009

AT THE O'NEILL FUNERAL HOME - William J. Doomey, age 88, of Icehouse Rd. Oakville, died Thursday, February 19, 2009 at Waterbury Hospital after a brief illness. He was the widower of Josephine (Marconi) Doomey to whom he was married for 51 years.

Bill was born in Waterbury on October 13, 1920, the son of the late John and Maria (Chuco) Doomey. He was a graduate of Leavenworth High School, Class of 1939 and the machinist program of Scovill Mfg. Co. He was employed for 10 years by the Timex Corp in Middlebury in the Guidance & Control Systems Dept as a tool engineer until 1961. In August 1961, William and family moved to Simi Valley California where he was employed by Litton Industries, Woodland Hills CA as an Operations Program Manager in the Guidance and Control Systems Dept. until his retirement in 1978. At that time he founded "Model Engineering" for model trains until he sold his business in 1989.

Bill was a very proud United States Navy veteran during World War II, enlisting in September of 1942 and served with distinction until January 1946. He served on the aircraft carrier , "The Saratoga" as a turret gunner on fighter planes. He was later transferred to the US Marines as a member of CASU12 Aircraft Mechanics Unit and served on the Pacific Islands of Guam, Sipan and Tinian. William returned to Connecticut in 1999.

Bill is survived by his cherished companion, Joan Pope and his adopted family of David & Kevin Pope and their children, who were honored and privileged to have known such a sincere, generous, pleasant and most positive individual. William also leaves his daughter, Mary Ellen McWhorter of Ramma CA and two sons, David Doomey of Ladera Ranch CA and John Doomey of Arleta CA as well as 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and his sister, Lydia Burr of Huntington Beach CA. he was predeceased by his two sons, William Jr. and Roger and two sisters, Ellen LaValle and Helen Baka.

A Memorial Mass for Mr. Doomey will be held on Friday, February 27, 2009 at 10:00am at St. John the Evangelist Church, Main St Watertown. Burial will full military honors will be held in Ramona California at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations in Mr. Doomey's memory may be to St. John the Evangelist, School Building Fund, 21 Academy Hill Watertown CT 06795.
