WATERBURY William J. Mercier Jr. age 83 formerly of Beth Lane and Store Ave Waterbury, died Saturday at the Summit of Plantsville after an extended illness. He was the widower of Rosemary (Hayden) Mercier.

Bill was born in Waterbury on March 7, 1925 the son of the late William J. Mercier Sr and Kathleen (Dalton) Mercier. He was a lifelong resident of Waterbury, born and raised on Waterbury's Washington Hill, a graduate of Leavenworth High School and a veteran of the US Army Air Corp, having proudly served his country during World War II. He was employed as a machine and tool designer at Scovill Mfg. and worked there for more than 45 years retiring in 1987. He was very active in the community as a founding member of the East End Seniors, member of the AARP Mill Plain Chapter, and a member of the East End Community Club. As a devout Catholic he was an active member of the Legion of Mary, the St Francis Xavier Holy Name Society and Bill was instrumental in establishing Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, raising funds and a founding member of the Holy Cross Fathers Club. He was a parishioner of SS Peter & Paul Church in Waterbury and he enjoyed studying genealogy.

Bill leaves two sons; William Mercier III and his wife Diane of Clinton CT and Robert Mercier and his wife Deborah of Waterbury, his daughter Mary Jean Wormer and her husband Andrew of Plantsville CT and three grandchildren, William J. Mercier IV, Kevin Wormer and Catie Wormer. He also leaves his sister-in-law, Joan Hayden of Cheshire as well as several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his long time friend and constant companion in his later years, Ruth Reidy.

Funeral services for Mr. Mercier will be held on Tuesday May 13, 2008 at 10:30am from the Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home 1581 E. Main Street Waterbury to SS Peter & Paul Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30am. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Monday evening May 12, 2008 from 6-8pm.
